Hoping to escape the gloom and doom of winter this year? Despite the current economic climate millions will still be jetting off to the sun. With destinations such as the Canary Islands expecting an influx of visitors – especially from key markets such as the UK and Germany. Thanks in no small part to the availability of cheap flights from the likes of Ryanair and easyJet.

Of the seven islands little Lanzarote is regarded as one of the more unspoiled options. It doesn’t have the high rise hotels of Gran Canaria or the crowded beaches of Tenerife. As tourism here has been allowed to evolve at a more natural pace. Which well suits an island of such outstanding natural beauty.

Where are the best locations to search for villas in Lanzarote?

During the winter months the two largest resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca offer the highest probability of good weather. And it is no coincidence that both of these destinations are located towards this southern end of the island. As Lanzarote despite being a small island still has a pronounced microclimate.

Puerto del Carmen is the island’s mega resort. Extending from its original origins in the Old Town harbour area some eight kilometres in the direction of the airport. Virtually absorbing the sister resort of Matagorda next door.

The resort was first created in the 1970´s – and in some respects that really shows. As it was designed to offer cheap budget breaks – with apartment complexes proliferating.

In the last year €16 million has been pumped into Puerto del Carmen by local tourist authorities who are desperate to take the resort more upmarket. And they are certainly making strides in this direction with the creation of a luxury marina and the opening of a new golf course on the edge of town.

Playa Blanca sits at the southern end of Lanzarote. Having emerged from its former shell as a quaint little fishing village during the 1990s´ it is now well established as the second most popular holiday destination on Lanzarote.

It’s a more upmarket resort than Puerto del Carmen and as a result there is a much better selection of holiday villas in Playa Blanca for rent. With decent properties available across all parts of the resort.

Many visitors overlook rural villas on the island. But Lanzarote sis so small that it’s possible to reach the beach in twenty minutes or under from virtually any location. So a rural break here doesn’t mean remote or cut off at all.
