The year round benign climate that Lanzarote enjoys has made it a popular tourist destination over the last forty years. As the eastern most Canary Island it has an average of only twenty days rainfall per year, whilst day-time temperatures in winter hover around 20ºC.

This consistently good climate means that holidaymakers can visit pretty much any time of year and expect to see the sun for at least part of their stay. The island as a result has a wealth of outdoor activities for visitors to take part in. From hang-gliding to surfing and horse-riding, there is plenty to do and see.

Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote has been an established resort for well over 40 years now. Like so many areas of mainland Spain, it developed from its origins as a fishing village mainly in response to the upsurge in popularity for package holidays in the Canary Islands. There is now a wide range of older and newer holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen, as well as holiday apartments and hotels. In fact, the town itself is undergoing something of a facelift currently, with a central feature being a more pedestrian friendly main thoroughfare. This is due to be completed well in time for the main summer holiday season in 2010.

Compared to other towns in Lanzarote, the scale of what is availble in Puerto

Puerto del Carmen is the longest-established tourist resort on Lanzarote, situated only about 10 minutes’ drive from the airport, and remains as popular as ever with holidaymakers to Lanzarote. As with many resorts in mainland Spain, the start of its popularity amongst UK and Irish tourists dates back to the early’60’s. Prior to this, Puerto del Carmen was a small fishing village, a feel that is retained if you venture into the “Old Town” which still has much of this original charm.

The newer parts of Puerto del Carmen boast a multitude of bars, restaurants, hotels villas and apartments for visitors to choose from. There are also quite a few late night bars and nightclubs in Puerto del Carmen. Some of these stay open

Hoping to escape the gloom and doom of winter this year? Despite the current economic climate millions will still be jetting off to the sun. With destinations such as the Canary Islands expecting an influx of visitors – especially from key markets such as the UK and Germany. Thanks in no small part to the availability of cheap flights from the likes of Ryanair and easyJet.

Of the seven islands little Lanzarote is regarded as one of the more unspoiled options. It doesn’t have the high rise hotels of Gran Canaria or the crowded beaches of Tenerife. As tourism here has been allowed to evolve at a more natural pace. Which well suits an island of such outstanding natural beauty.
