Most people associate Lanzarote with package holidays. A link that isn´t entirely unjustified as the island is a very popular tourist destination. Especially with travellers from the UK and Ireland.

But only around 20% of tourists stay in hotels on the island on an all inclusive basis. With many more instead opting for self-catering accommodation – in the form of Lanzarote holiday villas and apartments.

So which are the best destinations on the island for a tranquil rural holiday?

Nazaret
Oasis de Nazaret is a luxury residential enclave located in the centre of the island. Situated close to the former capital of Teguise – home to some of the most historic buildings on Lanzarote.

Nazaret enjoys an elevated hillside position – which ensures that guests staying here enjoy some great views across to the Timanfaya National Park. And is best known as the home of the upmarket restaurant and house museum LagOmar – the former home of the famous film star Omar Sharif.

Legend his it that the Hollywood actor had this fabulous holiday hideaway built for him, only to then promptly lose it in a game of cards. Either way this is a fascinating site – designed by the ubiqitous island born artist César Manrique.

Arrieta
Arrieta is a coastal fishing village that is reminiscent of Spain in the early 1970´s. As there is little development here – just a beautiful beach and a coupe of seafront restaurants serving great fresh fish.

The best place to stay in Arrieta is at the Finca del Mar – located just a few minutes walk from the beach and located on a huge former farm – which today is entirely powered by wind and solar energy.

Guests can choose from a range of different accommodation options and kids can even enjoy free rides on Mollie the resident donkey.

Haria
Haria is the greenest spot on Lanzarote – its palm packed valleys providing a complete contrast to the arid and volcanic south of the island.

Finca La Crucita is located on the outskirts of the village and offers a fine selection of some of the best quality villas in Lanzarote. Each titled after a different village on the island. Offering great guest facilities in a tranquil location.
